Bibliographic Notes

Modern marine gyro compasses are well proven and give excellent service with a minimum of attention and maintenance by the operator. They have, on most merchant and naval vessels, become the primary directional reference, leaving the magnetic compass very much the reliable stand-by. But as with the magnetic compass the prudent navigator must understand the equipment upon which he relies so much, and appreciate its limitations and the conditions which lead to the errors to which it may be subject. The ship's officer will therefore find the theory of the gyro compass at all levels of his studies for certification.

Marine Gyro Compasses for Ships' 0fficers has been written to cover the syllabuses for all grades of Department of Trade certificates of competency for deck officers in the Merchant Navy. The first section of the text discusses the free gyroscope and its properties which enable it to be converted into an instrument which provides a north reference. Methods of control of the gyro and of damping to a settling position are fully discussed. Also the theory of the gyro compass errors and how they may be corrected is introduced. In the subsequent chapters the commercial gyro compasses which are most commonly found in British Merchant ships are described to illustrate how the theory discussed is put into practice.

The text is liberally illustrated with line drawings of exceptional clarity. These with the clear and concise explanations make Marine Gyro Compasses for Ship's Officers the ideal reference in this subject.
