Written
by men who know the ropes and read all round the globe between
Greenland and the Antarctic, the Nautical Magazine needs no
introduction to seafarers, shipping people and marine enthusiasts of
any nationality. Its subscribers, some of whom were avid readers long
before many modern countries were on the map, are found under every
flag, afloat and ashore. If you are not yet one of them now is the
time to sign up. First published in March 1832 there is still no
better bargain anywhere for only 2.20 (GBP) per month; or 33.60 (GBP)
(U.K.), 39.00 (GBP) (Overseas) per year, mailed free to any address on
earth - even the South Pole.
Right
from the windjammer reign of Britain's sailor-king William IV, through
the succeeding steam age of Queen Victoria, and into the present time
the Nautical Magazine has been the voice of the experienced navigator.
It still is, more so than ever. And not only of masters, mates,
apprentices, and pilots, but engineers, radio officers, pursers,
stewards, the deck crowd and the stokers. The independent voice of all
those whose life is the sea and whose know-how is the key to the
world's commerce. So you are welcome to write letters to the
Editor-who will print them gladly- on any apt subject under the sun,
moon and stars, provided you keep your temper. Your views will be read
by owners, builders, marine superintendents, examiners and navigation
teachers, for they are all among our subscribers, as well as old
timers who have swallowed the anchor but keep abreast of our
correspondence columns. Many much needed reforms in the Merchant
Service stem from the pages of the Nautical Magazine, which was
founded by Rear-Admiral A. B. Becher, the foremost hydrographer of his
day, and who was also its first editor for 39 years until he retired
in 1871. The Admiralty got so much information out of the Nautical
Magazine for its own early survey records that it used to grant the
editor 100 (GBP) a year, that is, 50 (GBP) from Naval Funds and 50 (GBP)
from the Mercantile Marine Fund. Today our sheet anchor is the
subscription at 33.60 pounds (U.K.), 39.00 pounds (Overseas) a year
from men - and women, too - who know a good thing when they see it.
So
the Nautical Magazine started serving the Merchant Marine eight years
before the very first Cunard liner Britannia left Liverpool on her
maiden voyage to Halifax and Boston. And since that time it has had
only seven editors before the present one, who is a son of the sixth
editor.
